Mark Making and Movement

In my upcoming class Art Moves I will be combining mark making with expressive movement. Both powerful languages of expression humans have used since the dawn of our time.

While preparing for this class I started looking through my back catalogue of works and visual diaries, and found this …

While waiting for participants to arrive, Kyrre Texnæs Studio, 22nd October 2019

“Having switched off the lights and pulled down the blinds, I am now moving slowly along the length of paper I have rolled out along the empty studio floor. In silence, alone with the darkness, I calmly begin to make my marks. I am allowing my body to guide my movements. Responding only to myself. With each pass along the paper, I am immersing deeper into myself. On pass nr 3 I start to play music. Softly at first, though gradually allowing the volume to increase. What began as a faint rumble is morphing into a roar. I feel it screaming inside me. A piercing howl desperate to be let out. My movements have changed. No longer careful. Large. Sweeping. Wild.

Without warning the music stops. I switch on the lights. I am calm.”  Kat,
