Visual Notes

These ‘Visual notes’ were created during an art research residency in Iceland, January 2023 - far too cold to use my favourite field recording tools – my pencils - and my field work camera had malfunctioned. - I created them using the only tool I had available - my iPhone. My phone become both my sketch book, which I used to register my marks, as well as my field recorder. ‘Keynotes’ from the soundscape have been juxtaposed with images of the tactile, fixed yet fluid, ever changing dynamics of the landscape in the creation of a series of 20 ‘Visual Notes’, each 15cm x 15cm (prints available)

‘Visual Notes’ will form the basis for larger paintings and installations in the coming months/years, whilst being a work in itself.

The Storytellers Of The Skies

I have always known that my dear late friend has travelled in Iceland. I however did not know until after I had applied for this residency, that she too has made the journey to Grundarfjörõur.

Grundarfjörõur is surrounded by beaches, however it was only yesterday (20.01.23) I realised that a photograph I have of her – one of her favorites - of her telling her story - was taken at the exact spot I have been coming to to listen to the chatter - the stories - of the sea birds.

The sheltered bay at the foot of Kirkjufell mountain on the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula - a natural gathering place for Storytellers.
